Cherilyn Kurtz (she/her) is a photographer, interdisciplinary artist, and educator, based in New Jersey. She was born in Iowa, raised in Ohio, and spent eight formative years making photographs in Indiana. She constructs scenes for the camera and documents immediate surroundings, often against the background of motherhood. Presently she is attracted to the animacy of objects and the intersection of photographs and sculpture. Cherilyn received her MFA in Studio Art from Rutgers University (2020) and a BS in Photography from Indiana Wesleyan University (2009). At Rutgers, she was a member of the MMM cohort led by then Tepper Chair Kara Walker. In 2020, Cherilyn was a part of the inaugural Conversations in Practice residency at Oxbow. Her work has been shown at the Indianapolis Art Center, Brooklyn Army Terminal, The Church, Storage Space Gallery, and EFA Project Space curated by Adiana Blidaru of Living Content. She recently received a Fellowship from the New Jersey Council on the Arts. She currently teaches at Rutgers and Middlesex College.
